Welcoming Dr. James Schmidt to Prairie Rose Mandan
We’re proud to announce that Dr. James Schmidt has officially joined Prairie Rose Family Dentists as our newest associate dentist, seeing patients at our Mandan office location.
If the name sounds familiar, it’s no coincidence—Dr. James is the son of longtime Prairie Rose partner, Dr. Sid Schmidt, and brings with him a familiar legacy of patient-centered, community-focused care.
A Local Background Rooted in Service and Education
Born on the Yokosuka Naval Base in Japan while his father served as a naval dentist, Dr. James was raised in Bismarck Mandan and is a proud graduate of St. Mary’s Central High School. A standout both academically and musically, he was an All-State musician and a multi-sport athlete in soccer, basketball, and track.
Dr. James earned his Business Administration degree from the University of North Dakota, where he also served as a section leader in the Pride of the North Marching Band and President of his fraternity, Lambda Chi Alpha. He later attended Creighton University School of Dentistry, following in his father’s footsteps and cultivating a passion for clinical excellence and compassionate patient care.
Clinical Interests and Patient Care Philosophy
Dr. James Schmidt is passionate about delivering dental care that not only improves smiles but also empowers patients to take charge of their oral health. He’s a firm believer in advocating for what’s best for each individual, and his goal is for every patient to leave their appointment feeling informed, confident, and comfortable. With a strong clinical interest in restorative dentistry, Dr. James enjoys working on crowns, bridges, and extractions. He’s also trained in endodontics—commonly known as root canals—and implant treatments, giving him the ability to offer comprehensive care across a wide range of needs.
Dr. James Schmidt also expresses his commitment to patient communication. “I like to communicate what I’m doing and ensure my patients always feel heard,” he says. “Clear communication is key.” That commitment to listening and educating patients is at the heart of his care philosophy. For him, dentistry is about more than procedures—it’s about building relationships, earning trust, and being a steady presence on someone’s journey to better health.
“No one case is the same,” he shares. “It’s an honor to help someone feel better, smile brighter, or simply feel more relaxed when they come to the dentist.”
Why Prairie Rose Feels Like Home
Before becoming a doctor, Dr. James worked at all three Prairie Rose locations as a dental assistant during school breaks. That experience, combined with his deep roots in the Bismarck-Mandan area, made joining Prairie Rose a natural next step.
“I’m excited to be back in the community I grew up in,” he says. “There’s nothing quite like the small-town feel here—especially being on the river in the summer or enjoying the Mandan 4th of July parade!”
Life Outside the Office: Music, Dogs & North Dakota Adventures
When he’s not seeing patients, Dr. James Schmidt is all about making the most of life outside the office. He is s a self-proclaimed dog person (with a known allergy to cats!) and enjoys life with his fiancée and their two poodle-mix pups.
A lifelong musician, Dr. James can jam on the guitar, piano, saxophone, and bassoon—yep, four instruments and counting. He’s a huge fan of live music and loves being active year-round. Whether it’s snowboarding in the winter, hitting the river for some fishing in the summer, or sneaking in a round of golf or disc golf, he’s always on the move. He’s also a big basketball fan—both playing and watching—and enjoys ice skating and ice fishing when the temps drop, as they always do in North Dakota.
After a full day of outdoor fun or music-making, you’ll probably find him grabbing a bite at one of his favorite local spots like Charras and Tequila, Eat THAI, or Big Boy.
